WKS100: CNC Mini Lathe Build

Joe Katona and Ron Ginger return from last year's CNC Workshop Mini Mill build class to guide students through the conversion of a high quality, bench top lathe to CNC control. The machine will feature CNC threading capabilities, a unique feature for such a low cost, bench top CNC lathe. A lathe conversion is a first for the CNC workshop and will be quite popular. Enrollment is limited to 12 spots so don't miss out!

Note: Build classes start Monday April 24th.

In this build class students build a working, bench top CNC machine. A selection of a machine along with appropriate controls, motors, mechanical components and software is purchased by each student and an experienced instructor will guide the class through the entire conversion process. The student can be confident all the components will work together to build a successful machine. By the end of the course you will have a fully functional CNC machine to take home!

Build classes require pre-payment of the system cost. Shipping charges are included in the price. Students are responsible for getting the completed system from the workshop to their home.

All necessary tools will be provided for your use but you are free to bring your favorite hand tools if you prefer. Tools needed include screwdrivers, pliers, allen keys, small wrenches, nut drivers, etc.

You will need to provide a computer for checking out the system and the class will include training on the use of the machine. A laptop is probably the easiest PC to bring, but a desktop can be accommodated if needed. Exact PC requirements will be provided before the session.

Features Include:

• Based on the Little Machine Shop 7 X 16 Mini Lathe

• 2-axis lathe operation with threading

• Ball screws (preloaded) on all axes

• Travel is the same as the base, manual lathe

• Mach 4 machine control software

• Pokey controller with laptop operation

• Spindle on/off and speed control

• Limit switch and Home switch

• Basic tooling package included

NOTE:

This is advanced registration to reserve your seat in this build class. You will still need to purchase your machine, conversion parts and supplies. TechShop will provide you with instructions for purchasing those items prior to the class. Final cost has not yet been determined but is anticipated to be between $2500.00 and $3500.00.

WKS801: Jigs and the Woodshop

Jigs are an invaluable tool to streamline your craftsmanship and work more efficiently. Whether you’re a seasoned woodworking professional or a novice, jigs can help you work smarter and faster.

During this workshop, your experienced instructor will build different jigs with you and show you their many uses. You will then use your jigs in the construction of a small finished box. You will also discuss further jig making, including various table saw sleds for simple cuts and bevels, dado cuts, and mitres. TechShop has these jigs built and on-hand for member use.

This is a 4-hour workshop. Upon completion, you will have 4 versatile jigs to take home as well as a unique project that can be stained or painted.

Prerequisite:Successful completion of WOD101: Woodshop SBU is required before you take this workshop

Project: 4 Jigs, Wooden Box

Equipment Access: Woodshop

Safety:Closed-toe shoes, eye protection, short sleeves, and face shield are required. Hearing Protection and particle filter or dust mask when in the woodshop are advised.

WKS822: Custom Glassware - Laser and Sandblast

In this workshop, you will learn how to etch designs into glassware using a laser-cut template and the sandblaster!

Your experienced instructor will show you different methods for creating your template and the best way to tackle your designs. You will wrap a glass beer mug with a masking film and use the Epilog laser and rotary attachment to cut out a design of your own creation, then use the sandblaster to create a deeper etching. You may also choose to spray paint the etched areas before removing the masking film.

Please have a simple black-and-white design in a digital file to use for this workshop. TechShop will provide one mug for each student, masking film, and a few colors of spray paint.

This class is a perfect complementary course to your Laser Rotary SBU or Media Blasting and Powder Coating SBU. Brush up on your skills or introduce new tools into your maker repertoire!

Bring a flash drive or portable drive with your image file. All other materials will be provided
