ART1234: Introduction to Papercraft

Learn basic papercraft skills as an outlet for your creative side! Papercraft is a fun, impressive, inexpensive art form that is versatile enough to create just about anything you can imagine.

In this class, you will learn about design, construction methods, layering, part-cutting using precision scissors and hobby knives, piece placement and gluing techniques. You will use all of these and more to complete a small paper spaceship model designed by the instructor, or create your own project from scratch.

Discover how to avoid common pitfalls of the medium, and learn from an instructor with over 20 years of papercrafting experience. Find out how to make working joints and other moving parts. Learn the secrets of working large, and very small, with an introduction to micro-detailing.

ART1238: Introduction to Modular Making

Modular making is learning how to blueprint interlocking pieces for easy construction and enable a flexible arrangement of the design.

In this workshop, Maker Lindsay will teach how to rapidly sketch vector drawings in Adobe Illustrator and fabricate simple multiples out of paper using the laser cutter. Using paper engineering and pop-up design technique such as tabs and folds, students will develop a deeper understanding of paper and learn how to design a method to fit pieces together to create a tapestry of texture that will look like it's about to breathe.

The final project is a small, white, 3D paper sculpture arranged inside a paper frame. Participants will leave with an art piece that is ready for light color washes to be added to it.

ART1235SJ: Wire and Polyurethane Sculpture

In this class, you will create lightweight sculptures from wire and expanding insulation foam, a fun medium with nearly endless potential!

Learn how to control this challenging yet fun medium to create durable organic shapes that dry quickly. Practice armature building and foam application techniques, discover different textures you can achieve with foam, and discover how to avoid common pitfalls from an artist with several years’ experience with this foam.

There are many ways of creating with expanding foam. You can apply it directly to a twisted-wire armature or create a newspaper-stuffed chicken-wire form. You can spray a shape onto a non-stick tarp, and pop it free when it’s dry. New foam sticks well to dry foam, so you can adhere several pieces together to build sculptures, or use wire to attach them to each other.

This foam can be cut easily, so subtractive methods are also possible. Learn how the foam “behaves,” practice existing techniques or create your own! Your imagination is the only limit.

ART519: Pewter Drop Casting

Since the 11th century, pewter has been cast into objects of utility and beauty. An alloy of tin and copper, pewter is relatively malleable, and its soft sheen provides an elegant contrast to the steel which surrounds us today.

In this hands-on workshop, you will learn to make a mold and cast a small part using molten pewter. You will first create a plaster mold blank that can be carved using hand tools or any other carving instrument. Next, you will hand carve a simple part or design and will learn various other techniques such as using modeling clay or copying an existing piece. Finally, you will melt the pewter and make your casting to create a pendant, key fob, piece of jewelry, or small part.

ART103: Silkscreen Printing Basics - SBU

In this hands-on class, learn the basics of silkscreen printing. TechShop makes it easy by using vinyl stencils rather than photo-emulsion. Prepare a vinyl stencil, transfer onto a screen, apply ink to fabric through screen, and then heat set the ink. It’s that simple.

Want to print a t-shirt using your own artwork? Bring a simple black and white drawing that will be cut by hand. Participants who have passed the Vinyl Cutter Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class may bring in a pre-cut design to use. Otherwise, choose from several designs provided. Get ready to start making custom silkscreened t-shirts!

Project: Custom t-shirt

Prerequisites: None!

Equipment access: Silkscreen station

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!
