ART139: Introduction to Paper Circuits

Explore artistic expression with technology as a creative material! Paper circuits are a low-tech way of prototyping electronic components onto paper-based materials, so you can hack your notebook, a card, or even sketches to make them look alive.

Learn how to transform illustrations that also move and light up, utilizing conductive materials like copper tape and Z-axis tape to build a simple circuit design. Maker Lindsay will teach the mechanics of paper engineering pop-up design with circuits to characters and creatures. Make them sparkle using LEDs and switches with a clever pull-tab design to construct an interactive storyboard.

Project: Paper Circuit Creation

ART113: Silkscreen Printing Basics SBU

In this hands-on class, learn the basics of silkscreen printing. TechShop makes it easy by using vinyl stencils rather than photo-emulsion. Prepare a vinyl stencil, transfer onto a screen, apply ink to fabric through screen, and then heat set the ink. It’s that simple. You will learn the proper technique of applying Ink through a silkscreen while troubleshooting common mistakes so you can create your own custom products.

Want to print a t-shirt using your own artwork? Bring a simple black and white drawing that will be cut by hand. Participants who have passed the Vinyl Cutter Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class may bring in a pre-cut design to use. Otherwise, choose from several designs provided. Get ready to start making custom silkscreened t-shirts!

Project: Custom t-shirt

Prerequisites: None!

Equipment access: Silkscreen station

Safety: Closed-toe shoes are required.

T-shirt provided: black or white. Please bring your own if you would like a custom shirt color.

Recommended for sharp graphics on your shirt: CNC vinyl cutter SBU, but not required. This silkscreen class will teach a hand cutting vinyl method with a box cutter or X-ACTO knife. Choose from pre-approved images provided by the instructor.

If you have taken the vinyl cutting class, please cut your vinyl sheet ahead of time and bring it to class. You will need the negative for screen printing, not the vinyl sticker cut-out, so please bring the whole vinyl sheet unpeeled.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!
