WKS1212: Halloween: Laser Etch a Pumpkin!

Halloween is coming! How better to prepare than by laser etching your very own pumpkin to proudly display? This workshop is for laser pros and novices alike -- all who want to infuse a little tech into their Halloween decor are welcome. Participants may bring their own Adobe Illustrator file or choose from one of our pre-made designs. Drop in at any time during this 3-hour workshop, but do be aware that pumpkins will be etched on a first-come, first-served basis.

This workshop will NOT clear students to use TechShop's laser cutters. One pumpkin is included in the cost of the workshop, but you may bring additional pumpkins if you wish.

Safety Requirements: Closed-toe shoes must be worn.

WKS1239: Aluminum Casting with a Kiln

In this workshop, you will cast a small object from a hand-cut foam mold. Aluminum ingots will be heated to 1500 degrees in our small kiln while students carve their molds out of foam blocks. Your instructor will discuss pattern design, mold troubleshooting and, most importantly, safety.

Molten aluminum will be handled, so participants must wear leather footwear (preferably boots), long sleeves and pants.

This class will NOT clear you to use the kiln for metal casting, as this is an extremely dangerous activity. Once you have taken this workshop, you will be approved to bring molds you have designed to our once-monthly casting event. Molds will be collected by our staff and will be cast during off-hours in the shop. Students can observe the casting if they wish; castings will be left in the shop to cool, and students will be emailed when they are ready for pickup!

WKS1240: Make Custom Hammered and Enameled Copper Bowl

We're excited to bring you one of TechShop DC-Arlington's first team-taught classes! Join instructors Tony Ritchie and Kat Jamieson as they teach you to shape a sheet of copper into a bowl and then enamel your creation.

Make a colorful, eye-catching piece by forming and enameling your own hammered copper bowl. You’ll make your bowl using sheet metal shaping tools such as planishing hammers and shot bags. NOTE: All TechShop sheet metal shaping tools are not to be used to work with metal thicker than 16 gauge. Then, you will create a colorful finish for your new bowl with a variety of enameling techniques. Using colorful ground-glass powders applied to the metal and then firing in a high temperature kiln will allow you to give your bowl a one-of-a-kind look; layers of color can be built up using multiple quick firings. Whether you're giving it as a gift or keeping it for your own use, this bowl will be an attention-getter.

Once you have taken and successfully passed this class, you will be cleared to use the planishing hammer, metal shrinker and stretcher, Beverly shear, shot bags, and hammers. You will also be cleared to use the kiln.

Class Prerequisite: None

Basic materials will be provided.

Minimum age: 12

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

WKS1241: Busty Casting - Lost PLA Investment Casting

This is TechShop DC-Arlington's second team-taught workshop! Your instructors are excited to make teaching (and casting) magic happen.

First, you will learn how to tweak the design of 3D prints of busts specifically for the investment casting process. As your prints are being produced, Tony will discuss the investment casting process. Students will cast pre-printed busts of various historical or pop culture characters, as the plaster used to invest the prints takes quite some time to dry. At the completion of the class, you will walk away with an awesome aluminum bust of your own! Anyone who has taken this class and is interested in doing further castings should contact info.dca@techshop.ws to arrange for a casting session with Tony.

WKS1242: Lost Wax Casting - Cast Zinc Pendant

Curious to see how the ancient art of lost wax casting actually works? Take part in this lost wax casting class that lets you experience this process on a smaller scale.

This class starts out simply – with a few pieces of wax – and ends with a pendant you have cast from actual metal.

We will sculpt our pendant shapes out of wax, allowing each student to personalize their own. Next, we'll invest your pendant in a plaster mold and let it dry. The last step before casting will be to melt and pour out the wax from the molds. Finally, you'll cast your pendant in zinc. At the end of the class, you'll have a unique piece you made yourself!

Did you know that your Xbox Kinect can be hacked to become a 3D scanner? All you need is a bit of patience, software, and some excellent instruction! One of our knowledgeable 3D printing instructors will take you through the process, step by step. You'll not only learn about the wide-ranging usefulness of 3D scanning, but also how to turn your Kinect into a 3D scanner and operate the scanning software. You'll walk away from this workshop with the ability to hack your own 3D scanner, as well as an .stl file of yourself! This file type can be used on a 3D printer or even on the ShopBot. Get your loved ones what they've always wanted: a desktop version of you! It's possible, thanks to 3D scanning and this awesome workshop.

WKS131: Screen Printing and Vinyl Cutter SBUs

Vinyl cutting and screen printing go hand in hand, and this fun workshop will show you how!

First, you'll learn how to safely operate the vinyl cutter and use it to make custom stencils to suit all your screen printing needs. When using the vinyl cutter, as opposed to hand-cutting your stencils, the possibilities for easily making intricate designs is infinite. You'll also learn how to import your own vector designs from graphics programs to use the vinyl cutter to create cool stickers, custom signage, and more! Be sure to come with a design file in hand, or at least in mind.

Next, it's onto the screen printing station. You'll learn how to prep your stencil, transfer it to a screen, mask the screen, then apply ink through the stencil and screen onto your shirt. It's a much quicker, easier process than photo emulsion, and it cures quickly, too. You'll spend the last few minutes of class heat-setting your shirt, and voila! You'll be the proud owner of your very own, handmade screen printed shirt that is sure to be an eye catcher.

Once you have taken and successfully passed this class, you will be cleared to use the screen printing station AND vinyl cutter.

Project: Custom screen printed shirt

WKS107: Arduino-Powered Holiday LEDs

If you'd like to make some customized lighting for the holidays, this workshop is for you.

We will connect your Arduino to strips of NeoPixel LEDs to create lighting effects and show you how to simulate dripping icicles, twinkling stars, candlelight/firelight, and color-themed back-lighting. Then we will create additional effects suggested by participants. We also will discuss power options and what needs to be done to weatherproof projects for outdoor use.

So bring your Arduino, a laptop (if you don't have one, call ahead to let us know you need to borrow one), your ideas, and any items in which you may want to embed some LEDs (e.g., ornaments, wreaths, menorahs, model trains).

NeoPixel LED strips and connection materials will be provided. Some soldering is involved.

MATERIALS FEE: This class uses NeoPixel LED strips that are yours to keep after the class. The price of the class covers the $10 materials fee. If you are signing up for this class using an Unlimited Class Pass or a Maker SBU pass, you will need to pay the $10 materials fee to the front desk before class.

Prerequisites: Please bring an Arduino board and laptop to class with you
