CNC301: CNC Tormach Milling Machine SBU

In this class, learn to use the CNC (computer-controlled) mill. This machine is the perfect combination of precision and power for any prototyping or hobby milling needs. Learn to convert G-code (created in InventorCAM, Cut 3D or VCarve Pro) into actual parts made from aluminum, steel, and even titanium.

Materials fee:
Includes materials for the class project and a router bit for each student to keep.

Project: Bottle opener

Prerequisites: CAD experience, ability to create G-code, and experience with conventional milling are recommended.

Equipment access: CNC milling machine

Minimum age: 16

Supervision requirements: During class, all 16- and 17-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the CNC mill outside of class time, 16- and 17-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety

  • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, and short sleeves. Tie hair back or secure under a cap and remove all jewelry.

  • Advisable: Hearing protection.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

    CNC304: CNC Plasma Cutter SBU

Learn how to cut metal with the CNC (computer controlled) plasma cutter in this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class. The automated cutting torch works with graphics software like CorelDRAW and two-dimensional CAD drawings from AutoCAD or Autodesk Inventor to cut virtually any shape from sheet metal, cold rolled steel, aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and other metals. This machine cuts up to 1/2" thick and has a work surface of 4’ x 8’. Sit back and relax while the computer takes over.

Project: Cut a gear from a piece of metal

Prerequisites: CAD to CAM experience and an understanding of vector-based graphics are recommended.

    Equipment access: Plasma cutter

    Minimum age: 16

Supervision requirements: During class, all 16- and 17-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the plasma cutter outside of class time, 16- and 17-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

    Safety

  • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection

  • Advisable: hearing protection, respirator

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

    CNC310: CAD/CAM Software - InventorCAM

InventorCAM is the next level CAM program offered by TechShop, supporting multiple-axis machining, both 2.5D and 3D feature cut path generation, and high levels of control over the cutting paths generated. It has the powerful benefit of being directly embedded into Autodesk Inventor so users can easily switch back to creating or adjusting their part and the toolpaths automatically reflecting the changes.

InventorCAM's highly intuitive user interface allows toolpath generation to be as simple or as complex as users want it to be, with equal level of control over the geometry and makeup of cutting tools. It is the optimum tool for the intermediate to advanced TechShop CNC machinist.

In this class, students will follow the instructor step by step in creating toolpaths for half of a feature-rich part, then solidify their knowledge by creating the toolpaths for the other half with instructor guidance.

Prerequisites: This CAM works with Inventor to create GCode; you must be able to use Autodesk Inventor before signing up for this class.

In order to get the most out of this class, we recommend that students be familiar with TechShop's first-level CAM programs from Vectric: VCarve and Cut3D as well as have experience using the Tormach or the ShopBot. Introductory topics such as feeds and speeds, zeroing machines appropriately according to defined zeros in the CAM program, workholding, and loading exported toolpaths into the machines will not be reviewed.
