STEAM2006: CAMP - Mechatronics Build Camp

In this week long adventure, campers will combine computing, electronics and mechanical engineering to begin to understand the field of mechatronics. With TechShop's equipment at their disposal, the campers will build their own CNC machine. This Doodle Bot will teach them the solid foundational skills that will help take their STEAM skills to another level, while surrounding them in creative, empowering environment. Join TechShop and John Osborne, as he leads your campers on their first CNC build from scratch. Over the course of this five day camp, John will take your child from nothing to their own self built, Doodlebot.

This camp is designed for campers to learn the basics of design, engineering, electronics, programming and troubleshooting all while enjoying the hands on aspect of building their own cnc machine.

Campers will bring home their cnc machines home with them, at the end of this camp. That's a 300 dollar value, returning home with the campers !!!

STEAM2008: CAMP - Electric Motor and Dynamo Camp

The Electric Motor and Dynamo Camp is intended to introduce and inspire your campers in the 12-17 year age bracket to explore the electric motor in a fun, hands-on learning environment. The building of two unique Electric Motors / Dynamos will take place during this camp. The first will be a simple model, from which the campers will learn theory. Next, a presentation quality Solenoid Motor / Dynamo will be built using the lessons learned from the first project. This motor will last a lifetime, and be something that the campers are proud to show off. A brief history of the electric motor and dynamo will also be included, as well as open discussion on the use of electric motors in the world around us. This five day camp encourages both team and individual work, in a fun and empowering experience.

STEAM201: Summer Camp: Advanced Inventor Sessions

In appreciation for all of you go-getters hammering out yoursummer plans already, we're offering 10% off our camps for a limited time. The prices below already reflect that discount and are only available until March 5th. Save a couple of 20s and treat yourself for being ahead of the curve.

TechShop’s popular, hands-on STEAM Summer Camps are back and better than ever. Students are immersed in a creative environment where they explore science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. And across every subject, they learn how to approach life as problem solvers.

In these project-based STEAM sessions, participants take the knowledge they learned in our foundational STEAM classes and put it to the test. There is 1 project for each STEAM discipline, giving students 5 unique portfolio pieces.

Projects covered in this 30-hour course:

SCIENCE: LED-POWERING WIND TURBINE

Learn about the science of wind energy by making your own mini-turbine. Build the circuit, then create and customize your turbine blades, and put it all together to see the power of wind in action as your turbine lights an LED.

TECHNOLOGY: SOLAR-POWERED VIBROBOT

Explore BEAM robotics and the technology behind solar power by building your own robotic critter using simple components and small solar cells. Though these creatures are small, they have a lot of character and room for customization. How will your critter scuttle across a table?

ENGINEERING: EGG-DROP CHALLENGE

Test your engineering chops and explore material properties by designing and building a protective carrier to prevent an egg from cracking when dropped from certain heights. Then put your design to the ultimate test. Will it work? There’s only one way to find out!

ART: STOP-MOTION ANIMATION

Learn about film production by being the set designer, prop builder, and director of your very own stop-motion animation short film. Combine your 3D printing and laser-cutting skills to create the scenery and characters for your original flick and share it with the world.

MATH: BUILDING CATAPULTS

What factors determine how far a flung projectile flies? Put math concepts to work to design and build your own catapult. Then put your design to the test in the ultimate catapult contest. Whose catapult will fling the farthest?

This program meets for 6-hour sessions, Monday through Friday. Please show up 10 minutes early on your first day so you can complete registration.

SCIENCE: PAPER-CUT SHADOW LIGHTBOX

The science of light and the art of diffusion come together in this fun, creative project. Use shop tools to build your box frame, add LEDs, then use design software to create your shadow art, and cut it out on the laser cutter. Assemble and proudly display the art of science.

TECHNOLOGY: LIGHT-UP TOTE BAG

Did you know that circuits can be sewn? Learn about soft, electronic-textile circuits as you design and sew your own tote bag that lights up when you open it. Once you’ve learned the basics of soft circuits, a world of project possibilities awaits you.

ENGINEERING: ORNITHOPTER

Study the principles of winged flight by constructing a classic balsa monoplane whose design is based on the motion of birds flapping their wings. Then put your engineering chops to the test in a flight competition. Whose ornithopter will fly the farthest? Whose will have the smoothest flight?

ART: LIFECASTING

Dive into the world of mold making by casting a mold of your hand using plaster and alginate, then craft a mount for your hand mold, and make your own custom wall hanging.

MATH: BUILDING SCALE MODELS

Ever wonder how we make miniatures look believable? It’s all about the scale. How do we figure out the scale? Math! In this course, you’ll choose something to miniaturize and work through the math to make it in small scale.

This program will meet for 6 hours Monday through Friday. Please show up 10 minutes early on your first day so you can complete registration.
