STEAM1005: Soldering: Watch Kit

Learn how to use solder and a soldering iron to make a blinky kit project as well as learn how to solder electronic "through-hole" components for electronic printed circuit board assembly (PCBs).

Students will learn basic solder and flux types, safe soldering practices, and soldering iron maintenance. They will learn to de-solder using various techniques, including a "solder sucker" tool or solder braid.

This class is for kids ages 8–16.

Parents are not required to stay after checking their student(s) into class.

Project:This project is an easy-to-solder real-time watch kit with a unique laser cut acrylic casing. Four individual acrylic parts are cut to fit the internal PCB, battery, and switch perfectly. Materials include a Velcro wrist band. After soldering the Solder:Time, the watch is built by stacking the acrylic parts with the PCB and holding it together with the included screws. The kit is a conversation starter that looks great and is completely functional.
