AUD006: Autodesk Inventor - Basics

Learn how to navigate, sketch and model in Autodesk Inventor.

In this class, you will gain a basic understanding of parametric design; file types; dimensioning; geometric constraints; patterns; adding text; inserting image files; basic modeling including Extrude, Revolve, Loft and Sweep; assemblies; exporting your file and creating laser-able and CAMable files. The goal is to provide you with enough tools to use Inventor at a solid, basic level and to inspire you to seek out more advanced features such as simulation, mold making and sheet metal.

We will use the book, “Mastering Autodesk Inventor 2013,” to explain and teach concepts. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you purchase the book and bring it to class. For your convenience, it is available in the TechShop retail store.

TechShop members who take this class will receive $35 in store credit after the completion of the class.

AUD005 : Autodesk Inventor for Sheet Metal

In this project class, you will learn how to create and assemble sheet metal parts in Autodesk Inventor.

You will be guided through the process of building sheet metal housing features, creating patterns and using iFeatures. You will learn how to use equations to drive dimensions, how to generate two-dimensional drawings of your sheet metal parts, and how to export your geometry to a CAM program, enabling you to generate a file that can be used on a CNC machine.

Prerequisite: You MUST take the Autodesk Inventor Basics class before taking this class.

AUD008: Autodesk AutoCAD 2012 - Basics

Autodesk's AutoCAD has a long history as one of the very first CAD (computer aided drafting) programs available for personal computers. Today, AutoCAD 2012 software builds on this legacy and is still one of the world's leading 2D and 3D CAD design tools.

In this course, you will learn how to draw precise, vector-based CAD drawings that can be interpreted and used by CAM (computer aided machining) programs. The vector drawing skills taught in this class are the basis for creating designs to be used with TechShop's Epilog laser cutters, CNC vinyl cutter, Tormach CNC mill, ShopBot router, Flow waterjet cutter and CNC plasma cutter. The 2D drawing skills taught in this course also translate to designing, drawing and manipulating 3D parts in other Autodesk software such as Autodesk Inventor and Revit.

Learn:
  • How to set up your workspace for efficiency
  • Draw with arcs, polylines, splines and more
  • How to use text and reference images in your designs
  • How layers work
  • The theory behind drawing clean vectors
  • Optimization tips and tricks

AUD120: Autodesk Revit - 3D Modeling for Furniture

Revit is Autodesk's 3D modeling software for architecture.

In this basic class, you will learn how to use Revit on a furniture scale level to create small items. You will create an item with Revit’s sketch and modeling methods, manipulate its components as a family and project, and learn how to make the parts CAM ready for production. You will also see the benefits of using Revit to visualize your final design inside of its proposed location.

    Tools Required:
  • A computer with Autodesk Revit Architecture 2012 installed, provided by TechShop

    Materials Required:
  • Pen and note paper
  • Highlighter
  • A copy of Autodesk Revit Architecture 2012: No Experience Required (strongly recommended)
