CNC201: CAD to CAM Software - VCarve Pro and Cut3D

In this information packed, hands-on, computer class you will learn the ins and outs of working with both VCarve Pro and Cut3D software packages.

VCarve Pro is an easy-to-use CNC toolpath engine that generates precision toolpaths for virtually all CNC machines. You'll learn how to convert CAD DXF files and graphic designs into GCode-based CNC toolpaths for machining high quality parts and components.

Cut3D is a dedicated toolpath engine for CNC machining 3D models that have been designed using a 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor and other graphic design products. Cut3D's simple interface leads you step by step through the process of loading a model, setting the size, workholding, and calculating single, double- or four-sided roughing and finishing toolpaths. It will even allow you to virtually preview the results of your toolpath and then finally save the CNC code to run on your choice of machines.

Upon successful completion of this class you will have the experience and knowledge necessary to enroll in any Level 3 CNC Machining Series class.

Prerequisites: None!

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

Are you ready to start making your own professional quality heat pressed shirts at TechShop?

In this hands-on class, you'll learn all the basics of using our vinyl cutter and heat press to add your own graphic designs to shirts, blankets, flags, bags and more!

Learn to use the computer-controlled (CNC) vinyl cutter and heat press in this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class. Import vector (outline) designs from graphic software such as Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW into FlexiStarter, the software used to control the vinyl cutter. Next, use the CNC vinyl cutter to cut an adhesive vinyl sheet into professional looking signage or ready-to-apply paint masking as well as heat transfer vinyl for heat pressed shirts. This is a great tool for making screens for silkscreen printing, too!

Ever wanted to make cooler, multi-colored, vinyl-cut garments?

Learn how to prepare vector files in Adobe Illustrator and utilize advanced heat press techniques. See how great file preparation can help you create intricate, multi-layered designs that you will be proud to make and wear on a t-shirt, and then walk through all the steps of garment decoration. The instructor will have a selection of monsters that range in difficulty so that no matter your skill level, there will be one that's just right.

There will be emphasis on multi-layered Thermoflex Plus as well as a more advanced vinyl product known as TexTact foil adhesive. Participants are urged to bring an example .eps/.ai/.similar vector file so the instructor can establish a baseline for vector creation

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to safely operate the waterjet cutter, one of the most powerful tools at TechShop.

Precisely cut almost any flat material with a very thin, high pressure stream of water and abrasive garnet. Work with everything from the thinnest sheet metal to 8 inches of granite, as well as wood, glass, tile, marble, and more. This extremely versatile, easy-to-program, and low-waste machine works without the risk of heat damage. The large bed accommodates full sheets of material.

Class time is split between learning the FlowPath software and using the waterjet.

Note: When using the FlowJet, a consumables fee will be charged, only for cutting time, not setup time. The waterjet cuts quickly and cost estimate strategies will be covered.

CNC1219: Advanced Autodesk Inventor: Cam Clamps

This workshop is one in an "Art to Part" series featuring the design and realization of a woodworker's cam-style clamp. The series covers the process and steps needed to take an idea or "napkin sketch" and create an actual working physical product. It's not necessary to take these workshops in order (although that would certainly be helpful).

In this workshop, you will learn advanced Autodesk Inventor techniques and tools, including:
  • Top-down design, sketch blocks and multi-solid parts
  • How to use a "layout sketch" to design and constrain an assembly
  • How to create parameterized parts using linked parameters and an Excel worksheet
  • Constraints and more constraints
By the end, you will have a fully customizable cam clamp design.

This is the first in a 3-series workshop.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of AUD006: Autodesk Inventor - Basics is required before taking this workshop series.
