CNC101: Concepts of CNC - Level 1
This is the first in our CNC Machining Series of classes, a Level 1 class.
Learn the basics of CNC (computer numerical control) devices. This seminar will present the whole CNC process, from CAD (computer aided design) to CAM (computer aided machining) to CUT (cutting your part). Learn the essentials of calculating feeds and speeds. Understand the uses and differences between climb cutting and conventional cutting.
Many of our students have found that they end up taking all the classes in this CNC series, even if they have to schedule them out of order. It is strongly recommended to have taken either CNC Level 1 or CNC Level 2 BEFORE taking a CNC Level 3 or CNC Level 4 class.
NOTE: This class may be attended by students under 18 without a parent or guardian. Minimum age restriction still applies.
Once you have successfully completed this class you will have the knowledge needed to enroll in the next CNC Machining Series software classes and SBUs.

CNC102: CNC Vinyl Cutter SBU
In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn to make your own vehicle signs and banners and paint masks at TechShop on our computer-controlled vinyl cutter. You will learn how to import your vector (outline) designs from graphics tools like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW into FlexiStarter, the software used to control the vinyl cutter. After importing your artwork, you will use TechShop's CNC vinyl cutter to cut vinyl sheet into professional looking signage, or ready-to-apply self-adhesive paint masking. This is a great tool for making screens for silkscreen printing, too!
NOTE: This class may be attended by students under 18 without a parent or guardian. Minimum age restriction still applies.
You do not need to take "Concepts of CNC" for this class. You need to understand how vector based graphics work, and should be familiar with Adobe Illustrator or CORELDraw. If you are not familiar with either of those programs, we offer classes in both, in the "Computer (COM)" section.
Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

CNC201: CAD/CAM Software - VCarve Pro and Cut3D
In this information packed, hands-on computer class you will learn the ins and outs of working with both VCarve Pro and Cut3D software packages.
VCarve Pro is an easy-to-use CNC toolpath engine that generates precision toolpaths for virtually all CNC machines. You'll learn how to convert CAD DXF files and graphic designs into GCode-based CNC toolpaths for machining high quality parts and components.
Cut3D is a dedicated toolpath engine for CNC machining 3D models that have been designed using a 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor and other graphic design products. Cut3D's simple interface leads you step-by-step through the process of loading a model, setting the size, workholding, calculating single, double- or four-sided roughing and finishing toolpaths. It will even allow you to virtually preview the results of your toolpath and then finally save the CNC code to run on your choice of machines.
Upon successful completion of this class you will have the experience and knowledge necessary to enroll in any Level 3 CNC Machining Series class.

CNC302: CNC ShopBot SBU - Level 3
In this Level 3 Safety and Basic Use class (SBU), you will learn to translate your parts designed in 2D or 3D CAD software into physical reality using our CNC (computer numeric controlled) ShopBot router. Parts can be made from most woods, plastics, foams and other composites (no metal on this machine). This class is most useful to people who have previous CAD experience or have taken an introduction to CAD class.
Many of our students have found that they end up taking all the classes in this CNC series, even if they have to schedule them out of order. It is strongly recommended that you take CNC Level 1 and CNC Level 2 BEFORE taking a CNC Level 3 or CNC Level 4 classes.
For your safety please wear a short-sleeved shirt, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop. Safety glasses are also required; street glasses are not a substitute.
Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

CNC310: CAD/CAM Software - InventorCAM
InventorCAM is the next level CAM program offered by TechShop, supporting multiple-axis machining, both 2.5D and 3D feature cut path generation, and high levels of control over the cutting paths generated. It has the powerful benefit of being directly embedded into Autodesk Inventor so users can easily switch back to creating or adjusting their part and the toolpaths automatically reflecting the changes.
InventorCAM's highly intuitive user interface allows toolpath generation to be as simple or as complex as users want it to be, with equal level of control over the geometry and makeup of cutting tools. It is the optimum tool for the intermediate to advanced TechShop CNC machinist.
In this class, students will follow the instructor step by step in creating toolpaths for half of a feature-rich part, then solidify their knowledge by creating the toolpaths for the other half with instructor guidance.
Prerequisites: In order to get the most out of this class, we recommend that students be familiar with TechShop's first-level CAM programs from Vectric: VCarve and Cut3D as well as have experience using the Tormach or the ShopBot. Introductory topics such as feeds and speeds, zeroing machines appropriately according to defined zeros in the CAM program, workholding, and loading exported toolpaths into the machines will not be reviewed.

CNC401: CNC Waterjet Cutter SBU - Level 4
The Flow waterjet cutter is one of the most powerful tools in TechShop's arsenal. Using a high pressure stream of water mixed with abrasive garnet, the machine cuts precise shapes, lines and curves out of a wide variety of materials. It can cleanly cut through almost any flat material, including all kinds of metal, wood, glass, tile, marble, granite and more. It will cut the thinnest sheet metal as well as materials up to a foot thick. It creates no heat, so materials like stainless steel, glass and stone that are usually damaged by heat are unaffected by waterjet cutting. The only common material it won't cut is tempered glass, although it works well on regular glass.
The bed of the machine is large enough to take full sheets of material, but see your local store for details. The cutting flow is only 0.050" inches in diameter or less, so there very little waste.
In this class, you will spend two hours in the computer lab, learning how to use Flow Path software to prepare cutting files for the machine. The classroom session is followed by two hours, in the shop, using the waterjet. Once you have taken the class, you will be cleared to operate one of the most versatile machines in the shop.
Please note: When using the Flow jet, a consumables fee will be charged. You are only charged for cutting time, not setup time. The waterjet cuts quickly, and the fee charged is very reasonable. You can check the fee before cutting.
Prerequisite: Ability to create vector files with a drawing program. Basically, if you can use the laser cutter, you can use the waterjet cutter.
CAD to CAM experience or classes help, but is not required; the Flow jet uses proprietary software for CAD to CAM.
Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

CNC403: Tormach II - 4th Axis and Tool Changes
In this class, students who have taken the basic Tormach class will learn to use advanced features of the machine and Mach3 software as well as the 4th-axis attachment. You will learn how to set up a tool index of multiple tools, increasing your efficiency of machining parts using multiple tools and parts. You will also learn how to set up and manually work the 4th-axis rotary table, opening up the world of 4th-axis machining and workholding solutions.
The 4th-axis attachment allows you to machine on a rotating cylinder, held in the horizontal or vertical position.
Setting up the tool index allows you to change tools quickly, without having to zero your Z.
Prerequisite: You must have taken and passed the basic Tormach class before enrolling in this class.
