TXL109: Basic Sewing Machines - SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use both the serger* and sewing machine to sew and hem fabric. Acquire skills to correctly thread machine, fill and place the bobbin, and change the foot. Also learn how to sew straight, zig-zag, basting, and other specialty stitches on the sewing machine. Get hands-on serger experience using overlock stitching to create high quality, soft-feeling seams and fine rolled hems.*

These machines sew through regular-weight fabric, but not heavy duty materials like leather or thick canvas. Go on to create messenger bags, rocket parachutes, clothing, plushies, sails, costumes, and more!

Project: Pocket bag

Prerequisites: None

Equipment access: Sewing machine, non-industrial serger sewing machine*

Minimum age: 12

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using these sewing machines outside of class time, 12- to 15-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

* In stores with a non-industrial serger (TechShop Mid-Peninsula and TechShop Chandler) only.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

TXL111: Industrial Sewing Machines (Walking Foot, Straight Stitch, Serger) - SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use the Juki straight (or single) stitch , walking foot, and serger industrial sewing machines. Practice methods of speed control and accuracy. Operate the presser foot with a knee lever and enjoy continuous bobbin winding. Then get to know the walking foot industrial sewing machine. This powerful machine is perfect for working with heavyweight materials such as leather, canvas, or multiple layers of fabric. Experience the walking foot advantage as it moves both the top and bottom of the fabric to keep the fabric from shifting. Lastly, learn the Juki four-thread industrial serger sewing machine. Get hands-on serger experience using overlock stitching to create high quality, soft-feeling seams and fine rolled hems. Take advantage of this powerful machine to sew and hem heavy, layered materials like canvas and leather. Expect to increase productivity after learning these efficient machines and start sewing like a pro!

Equipment access: Industrial sewing machines: single stitch, walking foot and, serger

Minimum age: 12

Supervision requirements: All 12- to 15-year-olds must attend class with a parent or guardian and be supervised, while using the industrial sewing machines, by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.



Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

TXL103: CNC Embroiderer SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to create custom embroidery designs with the intuitive and easy-to-use Janome embroidery machine. Take part in several demos and become familiar with hooping methods, needles, threading, several types of stabilizers, and more. See how to create digitized stitches based on monogramming and logo art as well as clipart-style designs. New to digitizing? Take TXL204: Digitizer CNC Embroiderer Software next!

Project: Embroidered patch

Prerequisites: None

Equipment access: Embroidery machine

Minimum age: 12

TXL107: CNC Long Arm Quilting Machine - SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to quilt effortlessly with TechShop's CNC long arm quilting machine. Practice attaching fabric to the leads, winding bobbins, threading the machine, changing needles, and using the hopping foot. Stay in control with traditional quilting techniques or sit back and enjoy consistent stitch quality while the quilter automatically sews a pattern straight from the computer. Quilting has never been so easy!

Project: Quilt a 20” x 15” square

Prerequisites: Knowledge of quilting a plus

Equipment access: CNC long arm quilting machine

Minimum age: 12

Supervision requirements: All 12- to 15-year-olds must attend class with a parent or guardian and be supervised, while using the long arm quilting machine, by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

TXL204: Digitizer CNC Embroiderer Software

In this lecture-based class, learn the many aspects of this feature-rich, digitizing (creating machine embroidery stitches from 2D artwork) software package by Janome. (The software also supports Brother.) See how embroidery designs are created from existing artwork, objects (e.g., shapes, text, and clipart), and original artwork. This software-focused class does not include time on the CNC embroidery machine. Prepare to start having fun printing art in thread!

Project: None

Prerequisites: None. TXL103 CNC Embroidery Machine is recommended

Equipment access: Digitizer embroidery software

Minimum age: 12

Supervision requirements: All 12- to 15-year-olds must attend class with a parent or guardian and be supervised, while using the computer, by a parent or guardian.
