STEAM1201: Summer of Creation: Robotics

Are you ready to start programming your own computer boards or robots and take control of your computerized world?

In the TechShop Arduino Robotics camp, you will learn how to design, build and program your own microcontroller! This five-day camp will introduce budding hackers to the all-powerful Arduino board, which will be used to make a multitude of different projects throughout the week, culminating in your very own robot. This camp will also cover the use of the laser cutter and 3D printer to assist in fabricating parts for this class. The week will culminate in a robotics challenge open to family and friends.

Once you have successfully passed this course, you will be certified to use the Universal Laser Cutters Makerbot Replicator 2 3D printers at TechShop DCA.

Meet the Instructor: Johnny Dukovich received his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. In the Air Force, he worked on systems engineering projects involving jet engines and air-to-air missiles for fighter jet aircraft. After leaving the Air Force, Johnny worked on projects involving transportation, defense, and other areas as an analyst, modeler, and consultant. He currently runs a small business that specializes in conference and event software. Johnny has developed training materials and has given tutorials for many of the systems that he has developed. In the past few years he has been exploring the world of Arduino and really enjoys its integration of hardware and software. He has completed several Arduino-based projects and is currently working to integrate Arduino effects into his art work. In addition to teaching Arduino classes at TechShop, Johnny has volunteered his time teaching Arduino and programming to the DC Kids & Technology group.

Recommended: Students with little to no soldering and electronic experience are encouraged to take the Basic Electronics course first.

This TechShop week-long summer camp is for kids ages 12-17, Monday through Friday from 9AM-3PM.

STEAM1204: Summer of Creation: Make Your Own Turntable

Do you have an interest in recorded music? Do you have a collection of vinyl records that are functionally limited to decorating your bedroom walls? Well, tear them off the wall, bring them to TechShop, and build your very own vinyl record player from scratch!

This one-week summer camp (open to ages 16-18) will be a fun and educational introduction to analog sound through our digital CNC technology, basic electronics, and traditional woodworking techniques.

Day 1: Learn the basics of CNC routers and woodworking through our ShopBot Alpha router. By the end of the day, you will have digitally designed and cut the shell for your customized turntable.

Day 2: Dive into the physics of a phonograph and explore the science surrounding sound waves and wave transmission.

Days 3 and 4: Utilize TechShop's numerically-controlled machines (such as laser cutters and 3D printers) to fabricate the basic parts for our machinery.

Day 5: Customize and create your very own turntable that operates at all three standard RPM values.

Dust off those old Isaac Hayes records and let's start making!

Once you have successfully passed this course you will be certified to use the Universal laser cutters, ShopBot routers, and MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printers at TechShop.

About the Instructor: Kyle Bancroft has an extensive background in audio production. He has worked for over a decade in the music industry, beginning as a musician and recording his first solo project at the age of 16. He was introduced to the production side of the industry a year later when he began working as a recording engineer at a premiere bluegrass recording studio. Since this time, Kyle has been involved with sound from many angles (as an acoustical consultant, live sound engineer, stage manager, and induction loop engineer at the Smithsonian Institution). In addition to his experiences in audio, Kyle's formal education is in architecture, which has helped him develop his eye for design and hone his craftsmanship in making.

Calling all young innovators! Welcome to your summer of creation! Through this 5-day workshop students have the opportunity to explore creation from invention to fabrication. By working directly with professionals in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) field students have the opportunity to work in a real-world maker-setting. Design and Build Camp introduces young innovators on day 1 to the world of Computer Aided Design and Computer Numerically Controlled machinery. By the end of day 1 students will learn the basics of digital design and programming. On day 2 students dive into the world of laser cutting and 3D printing. Day 3 begins the “design” process as students create their own projects and tailor an educational track specific to them. Whether students are interested in vinyl decals or robotics we can help them achieve their goals. Camp will culminate on Friday afternoon with a showcase of their inventions and light refreshments. Friends and family are welcome to join us! Once you have successfully passed this course, you will be certified to use the Universal LaserCutters Makerbot Replicator 2 3D printers at TechShop DCA.
