PRO209: Ultimaker SBU

In this class, you will learn the basics of 3D printing, how to set up and use the Ultimaker 2 – and print a small part in PLA (polylactic acid) plastic. 3D printing is used to describe an additive process, which builds a physical object from a digital 3D file. A 3D object can be made from scratch using a digital modeling program such as: Inventor Pro, Blender or Fusion 360. You will learn how to use the Simplify software in this class as well.

3D printers build three-dimensional models from the bottom up by extruding a thin string of plastic on layer at a time. Programs are created based on a stereolithography (STL) CAD file and output to a programming language called G-code that the printer uses to create the part.

The Ultimaker can create parts as large as 22.3 x 22.3 x 20.5 cm (length x width x height). Print resolution (layer height) is from 0.3 mm to 0.06 mm (roughly 8.5” x 8.5” x 8”).

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!
