COM101: CAD to CAM - Fusion 360

In this class, you will learn the CAM portion of the powerful Fusion360 software.

Fusion360 is the latest offering from Autodesk, and add an extremely affordable and cloud based option to the latest manufacturing software trend, PLM (Product Lifecyle Management). This type of software allows you to import or draft a part, make an assembly of different parts, simulate motion and forces with engineering heat maps, photo render parts or assemblies, and program tool paths. This class will focus on the last of those. The toolpathing capabilities of this program includes full 3axis and 4axis support, as well as a few 5axis paths. This software will be used primarily with the Tormach CNC Mill, but can also be used with other CNC machines.

You will start by learning how to collaborate on another user's project, load a given model, set up stock and machine orientation, select tools, and program tool paths. By the end of this class, you will have a good grasp on programming a simple part from start to finish, as well as picking up some of the machining theory behind it.

1 session currently scheduled:

COM201: Adobe Illustrator for CNC

Makers and designers alike agree that vector drawing is the starting point of all CNC fabrication.

Adobe Illustrator is an extremely powerful 2D vector graphics drawing program -- almost any product or invention that you imagine can begin in Illustrator. By following the pathways offered in this class, you will be able to export your files to any of the CNC machines in the TechShop arsenal.

You will learn the basics of the interface and navigation, effective drawing techniques, converting bitmaps to vectors in one step, creating clean and optimized vectors, and the most efficient techniques to prepare your files for CNC operations. You will also learn how each of the CNC machines at TechShop will work with your file to create your projects.

This class provides the foundation of skills for the following classes: CNC Concepts, CAD/CAM, ShopBot SBU, Tormach SBU, CNC Vinyl Cutter SBU, Laser Cutter SBU, and Waterjet SBU.

Prerequisite: A working knowledge of the Windows operating environment.

COM207: CorelDRAW for CNC

Makers and designers alike agree that vector drawing is the starting point of all CNC fabrication. CorelDRAW is an extremely powerful 2D vector graphics drawing program similar to Adobe Illustrator. Almost any product or invention that you imagine can begin in CorelDRAW. By following the pathways offered in this class, you can export your files to any of the CNC machines in the TechShop arsenal.

In this class, you will learn the basics of the interface and navigation, effective drawing techniques, how to convert bitmaps to vectors in one step, creating clean and optimized vectors, and the most efficient techniques to prepare your files for CNC operations. COM130: Autodesk Fusion 360 Basics

Fusion 360 is Autodesk’s latest product development tool for design, fabrication and collaboration. Merging industrial and mechanical design, you will quickly explore organic shapes through intuitive free-form modeling tools, or create precise, parametric models – it’s up to you! Simply put, Fusion 360 is the platform for rapidly accelerating from an idea in your head to a manufactured product in your hand.

In this introductory course, you will learn about:
  • Cloud data management and collaboration
  • Navigation
  • Solid modeling
  • 2D sketching
  • T-spline sculpting
  • Creating assemblies
  • Rendering
By the end of class, you will have an understanding of direct and parametric modeling, dimensioned sketches, T-spline geometry, and much more!

Prerequisites: None!

Safety: Closed-toe shoes are required.
