COM201: Adobe Illustrator for CNC

Makers and designers alike agree that vector drawing is the starting point of all CNC fabrication. Adobe Illustrator is an extremely powerful 2D vector graphics drawing program. Almost any product or invention that you imagine can begin in Illustrator. By following the pathways offered in this class, you can export your files to any of the CNC machines in the TechShop arsenal.

In this class, you will learn the basics of the interface and navigation, effective drawing techniques, converting bitmaps to vectors in one step, creating clean and optimized vectors, and the most efficient techniques to prepare your files for CNC operations. You will also learn how each of the CNC machines at TechShop will work with your file to create your projects.

This class provides the foundation of skills for the following classes: CNC concepts, CAD / CAM, ShopBot SBU, Tormach SBU, CNC Vinyl Cutter SBU, Laser Cutter SBU, and WaterJet SBU.

PREREQUISITE: A working knowledge of Windows operating environment is required!

COM202: Adobe Photoshop for the Laser - Introduction

Want to etch images on wood, acrylic or other materials using the laser? Want to learn how to prepare your images using Adobe Photoshop?

In this art-to-part class we will introduce Adobe Photoshop and how to manipulate images to ensure you have the image you need when you get to the laser cutter. We will cover resolution and image characteristics, like brightness and sharpness. You will also learn methods for handling image data including layers, .psd format vs. .jpeg and other raster formats, and much more. Finally, you will etch your creation on the laser so you see the whole experience from art to part!

This class is a good introduction to Photoshop for other uses as well, although our focus will be on the functions that most laser users need when they start using Photoshop.

Prerequisite: Working knowledge of Windows operating environment is required!
