Fabric Etching with the Laser
Want to etch custom designs onto your jeans? Cut and etch leather? Etch images into velvet? Cut a ton of quilt squares? Join us as we experiment wildly discussing, cutting and etching all sorts of fabrics. We'll also discuss how to make intricate appliques and patches ready for iron-on. Bring fabric samples of your own to experiment with as time permits.
Laser experience not required. The instructor will drive the laser per your curiosities. If you like what you see, you can take the Laser Cutting and Etching Safety and Basic Usage so you can come back and run the machine yourself. People from past classes have gone on to personalize their own clothes, develop clothing products for sale, etch their grandkids' photos onto pillows, and make new art works.

Laser Play with Your Food
Ever been told "Stop playing with your food?" Well not in this class! Have fun laser cutting and etching edibles! We'll play with candy, chocolate, crackers, and more. Feel free to bring a food item and/or small artwork files in jpg format. Time permitting, we may use them.
You'll get to help decide what designs to lase on what foods. The laser machine will be run by the instructor so no previous laser experience is required. If you're new to the laser, this is a great class to watch the laser in action and see what it can do. Everyone will get to take some fun items home. This is a great class for kids and their fun-loving parents.
Note: Most items will not be kept food safe as we handle them. They will be decorated for novelty purposes only. Call the front desk for special event booking details.

Laser Cutting and Etching SBU
Would you like to be able to cut intricate designs or engrave images at the press of a button? You can do it in minutes in wood, most plastics, and paper with a laser cutter! In this Safety and Basic Use class (SBU), you will learn how to use TechShop's Epilog Helix computer-controlled 45-watt CO2 laser to cut, etch and engrave designs in a variety of materials up to 24" x 18" by 3/8" thick including plastics, woods, paper and cardboard, fabric, leather, and even chocolate! Produce your wildest dreams with this widely applicable tool. You'll never know how you lived without it.

Laser Engraver Rotary Attachment SBU
Want to etch wine glasses, bottles, flashlights, drumsticks and other cylindrical objects with your own images, text, and logos? Take this class and learn how to use the Epilog Helix laser cutter's Rotary Attachment. You'll also learn more Helix machine features and related lasing techniques to enhance your lasing results that can be applied to rotary as well as flatbed lasing. Bring a glass or clean bottle to etch and take home.
Class Prerequisite: You MUST take and pass the TechShop Laser Cutting and Etching SBU class before taking this class.

Wish you could be more efficient with your time on the laser? Take this class and learn about machine and software features that will make your job easier and quicker. We've been listening to the stumbling points and concerns TechShop laserists have had since we opened and we developed this class to address those issues and give you your next major leap in laser expertise. We will cover how to quickly find your sweet spot with a new material, how to do more varied cuts and etches in one pass, plus much, much more! ALSO, need to hold your work in the same place and flat? Want help with printed material registration? We will explore at least eight different jigs and discuss the applications of each, including jigs for the flatbed, one for the rotary attachment, several for registration of printed material (usually paper), and one for fabric. Lessons learned with the rotary jig can be applied to the flatbed. You will get time to discuss a jig issue you're grappling with and we'll help you brainstorm how to solve it. You will come away with many more ideas for how to handle your materials to get your desired results.

Join us in this Workholding and Registration Class, where we will explore at least eight different jigs and discuss the applications of each, including jigs for the flatbed, one for the rotary attachment, several for registration of printed material (usually paper), and one for fabric.
