Soldering and Basic Electronics SBU
Learn how to use solder and a soldering iron to make small stick figures, and also how to solder electronic "through-hole" components for electronic printed circuit board assembly (PCB's). You will learn basic solder and flux types along with safe soldering practices and soldering iron maintenance. Learn to de-solder using various techniques, including a "solder sucker" tool or solder braid. Build a project: LED Blinkatron 2000 - it's a simple soldering project that works! All parts included - add the potentiometer and it changes the blink speed. This is a fun first class for kids and adults!
NOTE: This class may be attended by students under 18 without a parent or guardian. Minimum age restriction still applies.
Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

Arduino 101: Part 1 Building a BBB
Add electronic brains to your projects. This class is for people who make stuff and would like to add some basic automation but have not yet worked with microprocessors. This is the first in a series of Arduino classes, and the Barebones Arduino board is the backbone for all of the other Arduino classes. The next class in the series, Part 2, is programming your new BBB.
In this class you will build a Barebones Arduino and a BUB board, used to upload programs to the Barebones Arduino, using soldering irons. No experience needed.
The class fees include a Barebones Arduino, a BUB board, and a USB cable.
NOTE: This class may be attended by students under 18 without a parent or guardian. Minimum age restriction still applies.

Arduino 101: Part 2 Programming the BBB
Add electronic brains to your projects. This class is for people who make stuff and would like to add some basic automation but have not yet worked with microprocessors.
This is Part 2 of the Arduino Electronics Series - Adding electronic brains to your projects. After successfully completing ELECTRONICS: Microprocessors for Makers - Arduino 101 Part 1, you will want to use it in your projects.
Please bring the Barebones Arduino board you built in the ELECTRONICS: Microprocessors for Makers - Arduino 101 Part 1 class, the BUB board, and a laptop with the Arduino software and drivers pre-installed. The software may be downloaded from: Arduino Software. If you do not have a laptop with the software and drivers installed, a few desktop computers are available, though several makers may need to share a machine.
In this class you will learn how to use an Arduino in simple projects. We will cover programming, and the simple electronics need to connect an Arduino to switches, dials, brightness, temperature, and other sensors; and to lights, motors, and other output devices. The three hours will switch between instruction, hands-on and some free time.
This is a fast track class for people who want to add simple automation to their projects. Example programs will be provided. You can cut and paste from the examples to start writing your own programs.
The class fee includes a breadboard, switch, sensors, motor, LEDs, and various electronic components.
Prerequisites: You must have a Barebones Arduino that can be used with a breadboard. That is, with male headers pointing down in the power rail and "front" edge holes (A0, RST, GND, +5, digital 0-13, and GND). You can either use the board you built in first class - Part 1: Arduino 101, or you can buy a pre-built and tested board from Modern Device. Make sure to tell them to use downward facing male headers for the front edge holes.
If you bring your own laptop, you MUST pre-download and install the: Arduino software and drivers.
NOTE: This class may be attended by students under 18 without a parent or guardian. Minimum age restriction still applies.

Build Your Own Arduino RoboBunny
Bring a stuffed animal to life! Make its eyes glow, its heart purr. Make it sing a song depending on how hard you squeeze it! After class, apply this to all your stuffed animals and impress your friends!
In this class, you will receive a stuffed animal and all the electronics to make the eyes glow three different colors, purr when squeezed, play two different tunes, and more.
You will learn some of the concepts and programming of an Arduino Controller, connect a variety of electronics parts and optionally do some soldering. You will learn how to enhance the software code to customize these features and add new ones by way of the handy Arduino board. Take these great skills and apply them to other stuffed animals, or more other electronics projects!
No prior Arduino or electronics experience required. Prior experience with stuffed animals preferred.
Warning: Your RoboBunny will not be safe for young children.
You may bring your own stuffed animal and if we think our pre-designed electronics will work with it, we will let you use it. Please note: the class materials fee includes the class bunny, even if we allow you to use your own.
NOTE: This class may be attended by students under 18 without a parent or guardian. Minimum age restriction still applies.

PCB Design using ExpressPCB -PART 1
This LECTURE class can be taken alone, or you can take both PART 1 and PART 2. PART 1 is required before you can take PART 2.
Part 1
For this first part of the PCB Design using ExpressPCB class, you will spend 3.5 hours in a class lecture situation, learning the basic principles of printed circuit board design and learn the free ExpressPCB design software to do full cycle printed circuit board (PCB) design. This lecture provides: “anatomy” and terminology of the PCB, an overview of the PCB requirements, and layout strategies.
Part 2 is a separate class in which you will be designing the actual PCB board and it will be sent out to be cut and returned so you can populate it and test it out!
NOTE: This class may be attended by students under 18 without a parent or guardian. Minimum age restriction still applies.
NOTE: This class has a 4 student minimum for the class to be held. ALL classes at TechShop subject to change; PLEASE ensure that we have correct contact information on file to contact you in the event of a schedule change.

PCB Design using ExpressPCB -PART 2- [Session 1]
NOTE: You MUST have taken PART 1 of this class in order to take PART 2
Part 2
This PART 2 PCB Design class is a separate hands-on class, consisting of two (2) sessions with a layout period between them. This class runs over the course of 3 weeks. A detailed time-line is provided below.
The 1st session of PART 2 provides additional hands-on experience with ExpressPCB, introduces the homework and logistics of the class. Bring your laptop with the software pre-loaded: www.expresspcb.com
Layout period
During this 2-week period you will lay out your PCB in ExpressPCB, and then your layouts will be sent for fabrication. Support from instructor will be available via email. Peer exchange is encouraged, and facilitated by a web group.
The 2nd session of PART 2 will provide time to assemble and test your PCB board!
Menu for the layout period consists of two options:
Option 1. Homework: You will be provided with a schematic of a motor controller and a set of requirements.
Option 2. Your own project: This option is added primarily for students who have some experience building circuits without PCBs (breadboard, vector board, wire wrap, etc). To apply for this option, please respond to this request for proposal.
Timeline for the class:| Sun, Sept 19 | 12p | Optional deadline. Custom project proposal due (via email to instructor) | | Sat, Sept 25 | 1:30p - 3:00p | Session 1. Intro to the lab, homework description, "ExpressPCB sandbox" | | Sun, Oct 10 | 12p | DEADLINE. PCB layout due to instructor via email. Late submissions may not arrive in time for session 2. | | Sat, Oct 16 | 12p - 4p | Session 2. Assembly and bring-up workshop. |
Soldering experience and some electronics knowledge a MUST to be successful in this class!
