BLK101: Blacksmithing Basics
Class Number 1350-115253
Learn the beginning skills of traditional blacksmithing. This class will cover correct hammering techniques and the use of tongs, punches, cut off hardies, and veining chisels. We will also learn about heat sources, both traditional and modern, as well as the basics of quenching and tempering. Learn to confidently and safely hammer metal into functional and decorative objects, starting with a leaf wall hook. Come ready to work up a sweat and get your hands dirty.
Project: Leaf Wall Hook
Prerequisites: None. However, MTL103: Basic Metal Shop is recommended.
Equipment access: Anvil, Propane Forge, Hot Cut Hardie, Veining Chisel
Supervision requirements: During class, all 16- and 17-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.
When using the forge and anvil outside of class time, 16- and 17-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.
- Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes made of natural fibers or leather; natural fiber or leather shirt; natural fiber or leather long pants; hearing protection; eye protection
Advisable: Leather jacket, leather pants, leather boots, leather apron
