TXL101: Basic Sewing Machine SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use a sewing machine. Acquire skills to correctly thread machine, fill and place the bobbin, and change the foot. Also learn to sew straight, zig-zag, basting, and other specialty stitches.

This machine sews through regular weight fabric but not heavy duty materials like leather or thick canvas. Go on to create pillows, clothing, plushies, costumes, and more!

Project: Pocket bag

Prerequisites: None

Equipment access: Sewing machine

Supervision requirements: During class, all students 8–12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the sewing machine outside of class time, members 8–12 years of age must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety: Closed-toe shoes are required.

Passing this class is a requirement to use this equipment at TechShop
