GASIFICATION is a process that converts organic or fossil-based carbonaceous materials (wood, coffee grounds, walnut shells, etc.) into carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. This is achieved by reacting the material at high temperatures (>700°C), without combustion, with a controlled amount of oxygen and/or steam. The resulting gas mixture is called syngas (from synthesis gas or synthetic gas) or producer gas and is itself a fuel. The power derived from gasification of biomass and combustion of the resultant gas is considered to be a source of renewable energy.

Local artist and TechShop instructor Ryan Doyle will kick off this series of workshops with a two-hour lecture, "Introduction to Gasification," offered on two separate dates. The lecture an in-depth look at the gasifier, its political history, and the scientific processes and chemical reactions that make it work. The presentation will end with a Skype Q and A session with the science team at All Power Labs in Berkeley, Calif. In the following weeks, Doyle will offer free community workshops to fabricate a complete working gasification experimenter's kit (www.gekgasifier.com) to run his 1967 International Travelall truck on wood pellets.

ABOUT THE HOST
Ryan C. Doyle's artwork can be described as huge, massive, loud, dangerous, and thought provoking. At 6'6" and 264 pounds, his stature is intimidating and his smile is guaranteed to pull the audience into his multi-layered artworks where they can physically manipulate and interact with his sculptures. Doyle's aim is to engage his audience and push the limits of personal "safety." If art’s true nature is to change the emotions of the viewer, the artist offers an exciting relationship for the audience to be terrified, exhausted and empowered after courageously volunteering to “ride” his works.

Doyle has been profiled in numerous publications including the NY Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Popular Mechanics, MAKE, Wired, Detroit Metro Times, New York Magazine, The Village Voice, and Free Amsterdam. Doyle has appeared on popular TV shows such as Junk Yard Wars, Monster Garage, and Junkies, and was a member of the creation team/cast for Rock’n Roll Acid Test. He has exhibited extensively across America and Europe, including festivals such as The Venice Biennalle, AND festival, The Influencers, The Hand of Man tour with Robochrist, Device Art, RoboDock, Performa, and Coachella.
