For the month of September, please welcome plastics engineer Ken Nelson as a resident expert at TechShop Detroit! Ken is a retired plastics application development expert from DuPont who worked as a consultant to the auto industry and comes to us from TechShop Menlo Park. He will hold a 3-part seminar on the fundamentals of his field from Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 to Sunday, Sept. 23. Ken brings a career's-worth of theory and mechanics to each of these sessions:
- Fundamentals of Plastics - Saturday 9/22 3:00-4:30pm - What are the different families of plastics? What are their properties, and how do you choose the material that's right for your project? In this course, Ken covers the properties of plastics and how they figure into your part design. This session is great for applying to part design, or just to satisfy your curiosity about a material found literally everywhere in our lives.
- Plastic Part Design - Saturday 9/22 4:30-6:00pm - Good design means efficient production, good looks and, ultimately, functional parts that won't fail in use. This session covers design mechanics aimed at giving your part all three.
- Mold Design for Plastic Parts - Sunday 9/23 2:00-3:30pm - You know the structure of your plastic part -- now you need the mold to produce it. Ken covers mold theory, anatomy and points on machining to produce an effective mold and a great plastic product.
Ken will also teach our Injection Molder SBU sessions for September. Learn the basics of this versatile tool from an industry expert.
This 2-day seminar is composed of 3 interactive lectures and concludes with our Injection Molder SBU. Sign up for any part you'd like to attend -- the entire series is highly recommended for anyone planning to design molded plastic parts. Please bring a plastic part that you've made or found for analysis and critique! For more details, call (313) 583-3831 and ask for Jason.
